Anti-wrinkle injections, often know as Botox®, are a form of Botulinum Neurotoxin Type A, which temporarily causes muscle to relax. Botox injections have become an increasingly popular cosmetic treatment used to smooth out or soften wrinkle lines. It is most commonly used for frown lines in between the eyebrows, the forehead and for crow’s feet around the eyes.
It is a relatively painless and quick procedure with results lasting approx.3- 4 months.

Questions and Answers
What is botox:
Botox is an FDA approved toxin ,and is short for botulinum toxin . Botox, when injected, blocks communication between the nerves and muscles allowing for its ability to smooth facial wrinkles.
What does the procedure involve:
For the purposes of improving the appearance of wrinkles, small doses of botox are injected into specific facial muscles and immobilizes or weakens them
The treatment begins to works after 5-10 days and make wear off 6 weeks to 3-4 months after injection
Results are temporary and subsequent treatments are required to maintain the desired effects.
Is it painful?:
Botox is administered with a very fine needle into the skin. It stings for a short while upon injection and immediately afterwards. Some patients experience a headache-like effect after injection.
How long does it take to kick in and how long does it last?:

Botox takes 1-2 weeks to fully take effect. It lasts approx. 3-4 months. Results are variable with some patients noticing result starting to wear off after 6 weeks.
What are the side effects?:
Common injection related reactions occur and include; bruising, swelling, redness, tenderness and headache. Increased bruising and bleeding are common in patients taking medications that reduce blood clotting such as aspirin, ibuprofen and warfarin. We recommend stopping such medications 10-14 days prior to the procedure.
Other risks and complications of BOTOX includes but are not limited to; allergic reactions, ptosis (drooping) of the eyelid, abnormal facial expression, paralysis of a nearby muscles, disorientation, double vision, facial pain, asymmetrical appearance, headache, nausea, flu-like symptoms, impaired swallowing/speech, permanent muscle atrophy, nerve irritability and production of antibodies with unknown general health effects. Ptsosis of the eyelids occurs is 3% of cases approx. and is caused by migration of the botox affecting the muscles the controls the eyelid. It is treated by using a precribed eyedrops for 4-6 weeks. There also may be a link between egg allergy and botox . Many patients feel a "tightness" in the forehead soon after botox starts to work. This usually loosens after 2-3 weels in most patients.
Who can not have botox?:
BOTOX should not be used in people who have myasthenia gravis, Eaton-Lambert syndrome, Lou Gehrig’s disease or any other neurological disorder.
BOTOX should not be used on pregnant or lactating women. BOTOX can not be administered to patients under the age of 18.
What if I don’t like the results of BOTOX?:
Most patients are pleased with the results of their BOTOX injections. However, like any cosmetic procedure, there is no guarantee that you will be completed satisfied. There is no guarantee that wrinkles will disappear completely or that you will not require additional treatments to try and achieve the results you seek. Often, patients need more BOTOX units in some areas and less in others. This is only realised by trial and error. The beauty of BOTOX is that it does wear off, and if you don’t like the results, it will wear off after about 3-4 months and your muscles and expressions will return to the way they previously were.
